Is Chiropractic Safe, Perth? Let’s Talk About the Evidence
If you’ve ever searched whether chiropractic is safe, you’ve probably seen both passionate endorsements and alarming warnings. It’s confusing — and when it comes to your health, confusion isn’t helpful. At PPI in West Leederville, we believe you deserve straight answers. Let’s separate fact from fear.
Myth 1: “Chiropractors aren’t real doctors”
In Australia, chiropractors complete a minimum five-year accredited university degree and are registered with AHPRA — the same body that registers medical practitioners and physiotherapists. They’re subject to the same rigorous standards of continuing professional development and regulatory oversight.
Myth 2: “Neck adjustments cause strokes”
This is the biggest concern, so let’s look at the evidence carefully. The landmark study by Cassidy et al. (2008, Spine journal) examined over 800 stroke cases and compared patients who saw a chiropractor with those who saw a GP. Their conclusion: “No evidence of excess risk of VBA stroke associated with chiropractic care compared to primary care.”
The association between chiropractic visits and stroke was the same as the association between GP visits and stroke — strongly suggesting the underlying symptoms (neck pain, headache) drove people to seek care, not that the care caused the stroke. A 2017 follow-up study found no excess risk of carotid artery stroke after chiropractic care.
Your risk of a serious adverse event from a chiropractic adjustment is estimated at roughly 1 in 2 million to 1 in 5 million manipulations — comparable to being struck by lightning.
Myth 3: “Once you start, you have to keep going forever”
No ethical chiropractor will tell you that. At PPI, we assess, treat, and review. Some people need a few sessions for an acute issue. Others with chronic conditions may choose periodic maintenance — but that’s always a choice.
Myth 4: “Chiropractic is dangerous”
Malpractice insurance premiums — set by actuaries based on real claims data — are significantly lower for chiropractors than medical doctors, often 10 times lower. Minor side-effects like temporary soreness after an adjustment are common (30-60% of patients) and resolve within 24 hours. Serious complications are exceptionally rare.
When Chiropractic Is NOT Appropriate
A good chiropractor knows their limits. Treatment may not be suitable for: suspected fractures, severe osteoporosis, cauda equina syndrome, spinal cancer, acute inflammatory arthritis, or if you’re on blood-thinning medication. A thorough initial assessment catches these red flags.
The Bottom Line
Based on the evidence, chiropractic care is one of the most thoroughly researched and safest non-invasive treatment options for musculoskeletal conditions. Australian training standards are world-class, the regulatory framework is robust, and serious adverse events are vanishingly rare.
