Whiplash is a type of injury that occurs when the head and/or body are suddenly propelled forward and then stopped, resulting in trauma to the neck, mid-back, and shoulder region. It can range in severity from minor to severe. When assessing a patient with a whiplash injury, the clinician will categorise the patient into one of four stages, based on the extent of the damage.
Minor stages of whiplash can be effectively managed by chiropractors and physiotherapists and may involve the minor damage of soft tissue structures and possible sprains of joints in the neck. Higher stages of whiplash may require x-ray or CT imaging to ensure it is safe to proceed with treatment. It is important to receive a thorough assessment and proper treatment for a whiplash injury in order to fully recover and prevent long-term complications.
