What to Expect at Your First Physiotherapy Appointment in Perth

You’ve booked your first physiotherapy appointment. Maybe you’ve been nursing a niggling injury, or a sudden tweak has pushed you to seek help. You might be feeling a little unsure — that’s completely normal. At PPI in West Leederville, we see first-timers every day. Here’s exactly what to expect.

What to Wear

Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Shorts for lower body issues, a singlet for shoulder concerns. Think activewear — your physio needs to see how you move. If you’re coming from work, bring a change of clothes.

What to Bring

  • GP referral — only needed for Medicare CDM/EPC plans or workers comp claims
  • Imaging — X-rays, MRI, CT scans if you have them (not required otherwise)
  • Private health insurance card — PPI has HICAPS on-site for instant claiming
  • Medicare card — if applicable
  • Medication list — especially pain or anti-inflammatory medications

The Assessment Process

1. History Taking (15-20 min)

Your physio asks about your main complaint, how it started, what aggravates it, your health and lifestyle. Be honest — the more they understand, the better they can help.

2. Movement Screen (5-10 min)

Simple movements — bending, squatting, lifting — to see where restrictions and pain patterns appear.

3. Physical Exam (10-15 min)

Hands-on assessment of joint mobility, muscle strength, and special orthopaedic tests. You’re always in control — if anything’s too uncomfortable, say so.

4. Diagnosis and Explanation (5-10 min)

A clear diagnosis in plain language with an explanation of what’s happening and why.

Will You Be Treated on Day One?

In most cases, yes. Treatment often includes manual therapy, simple exercises to start immediately, and activity modification advice. For complex presentations, the assessment may take the full session, but you’ll leave with a clear plan.

Follow-Up Plan

Your physio recommends a plan tailored to you. Acute injuries may need just a few sessions; chronic issues may need more. If other services would help (massage, exercise physiology, podiatry), they’re all under one roof at PPI.

FAQ

Will it hurt?

It shouldn’t. Some parts may be uncomfortable if pressing on a tender spot, but you’re always in control.

Do I need a referral?

No — physiotherapists are first-contact practitioners. Exceptions: Medicare CDM plans or workers comp.

How many sessions?

Depends on your condition. Some feel better after 1-2 sessions. Your physio gives an estimate after assessment.
