If your toenails have been damaged by fungal infection, trauma, or years of running — and you’ve been hiding your feet ever since — KeryFlex cosmetic nail restoration offers an immediate, natural-looking solution in a single appointment.
Available at Peak Performance Institute in West Leederville, KeryFlex is a composite resin system that remodels damaged nails into flexible, durable, and cosmetically natural replacements. Unlike rigid acrylic nails or temporary fixes, a KeryFlex nail moves with your toe, lets the underlying nail grow naturally, and resists discolouration from nail polish, acetone, or daily wear.
What Is KeryFlex Nail Restoration?
KeryFlex is a podiatrist-applied nail restoration system designed for toenails (and fingernails) that have been compromised by:
- Onychomycosis — fungal nail infections that leave nails thick, crumbly, or discoloured
- Trauma — from running, dropped objects, or repetitive microtrauma (common in runners and dancers)
- Nail surgery — partial or total nail removal where regrowth is slow or unsatisfactory
- Congenital defects — nails that never grew properly
The composite resin bonds to the remaining natural nail plate and is sculpted in real-time by your podiatrist to match the shape, thickness, and contour of a healthy nail — including the natural curvature and free edge. It cures under LED light within seconds and you walk out with a nail that looks and feels real.
KeryFlex vs Acrylics: What’s the Difference?
| Feature | KeryFlex | Acrylic Nail |
|---|---|---|
| Flexibility | Bends with the toe — won’t crack or pop off | Rigid — can snap with movement or footwear pressure |
| Porosity | Non-porous — moisture can’t penetrate to the nail bed | Porous — can trap moisture and promote fungal growth underneath |
| Biocompatibility | Tissue-compatible — won’t irritate the nail bed or surrounding skin | Can cause contact dermatitis or chemical irritation |
| Durability | Lasts 6–8 weeks, gradually grows out with the natural nail | 2–4 weeks before lifting or requiring fill |
| Acetone resistance | Unaffected by nail polish removers, acetone, or detergents | Dissolves or softens on contact with acetone |
| Application setting | Clinical — applied by a registered podiatrist in a sterile environment | Salon — variable hygiene standards |
| Purpose | Medical-grade restoration of damaged nails | Cosmetic enhancement of healthy nails |
KeryFlex isn’t nail art. It’s a functional, medical-grade prosthesis for nails that can’t perform their protective role — and the clinical setting makes all the difference. A podiatrist assesses the nail bed health, clears any debris or fungal residue, and ensures the underlying tissue is ready before application.
The KeryFlex Application Process
- Nail preparation (10 minutes) — Your podiatrist debrides (cleans and reduces) the damaged nail, removing loose or infected material. The nail surface is gently roughened to create a bonding surface, and the surrounding skin is protected.
- Primer application — A bonding agent is applied to the remaining nail plate to ensure the resin adheres securely.
- Resin sculpting (15–20 minutes) — The KeryFlex composite resin is applied in layers and sculpted by hand to match the natural shape of your nail. Your podiatrist builds the nail to the correct thickness, curvature, and free edge length. Three colour options are available — clear, natural, and opaque — matched to your skin tone and surrounding nails.
- LED curing (30–60 seconds per layer) — Each layer is cured under an LED light. The finished nail is hard, flexible, and ready for immediate weight-bearing.
- Finishing and shaping — The nail is filed and buffed to a natural lustre. You can apply nail polish immediately if desired — KeryFlex is completely acetone-resistant.
Total appointment time: approximately 30 minutes for a single nail. Multiple nails can be treated in the same session.
Who Is It For?
KeryFlex suits patients who:
- Are currently undergoing antifungal treatment (topical or Lunula laser) and want cosmetically acceptable nails during the 6–12 month regrowth period
- Have permanently damaged nails from chronic trauma (common in long-distance runners, soccer players, ballet dancers)
- Have lost a nail entirely due to surgery or injury and want the cosmetic and protective benefits of a prosthetic nail
- Want to feel confident in open-toed shoes, at the beach, or in the gym again — immediately
It is NOT a treatment for active fungal infection — that must be addressed separately (for example, with Lunula cold laser). Rather, KeryFlex and Lunula work as complementary services: Lunula clears the infection, and KeryFlex provides the cosmetic restoration while the new, healthy nail grows in underneath.
What to Expect: Longevity and Maintenance
- Duration: A KeryFlex nail typically lasts 6–8 weeks, at which point the natural nail has grown enough that a maintenance appointment is recommended to re-sculpt the base.
- Natural nail growth: As your natural nail grows, the KeryFlex nail moves forward with it. The composite covers the visible portion while the new nail emerges from the matrix.
- Removal: KeryFlex is removed safely by a podiatrist — it is filed down and the remaining material is lifted without damaging the underlying nail. DIY removal is not recommended.
- Can it be done on a toe with no nail? Yes — KeryFlex can be applied to the nail bed itself, provided the tissue is intact and healthy. Your podiatrist will assess this at your consultation.
Why PPI for Your Nail Restoration?
At Peak Performance Institute, KeryFlex nail restoration sits within a complete podiatry service. Your podiatrist — Aaron Gregory — can simultaneously manage the underlying cause of your nail damage, whether that’s fungal infection, biomechanical nail trauma from running, or post-surgical recovery. You’re not getting a cosmetic fix in isolation; you’re getting a clinical solution with follow-up care.
For patients combining KeryFlex with Lunula cold laser treatment, the workflow is seamless — same clinic, same podiatrist, coordinated appointments.
